Completing his predecessors work was now paramount. With the collapse of the world government, the financial institutions, and the last of the major corporations the time was now at hand. Families had been chosen long ago and had all assisted in planning and construction, provisioning.
Michael awaited the families arrival he busied himself on his assigned duties. Over the last decade, during the final phases of the project, he had familiarized himself with every aspect of the structure, propulsion, navigation, life support; the list went on and on. The structure was concealed in plain sight, directly atop one of the tallest buildings in the world; Simpson Tower. Being the current Simpson made Michael the leader of this group. As the world below fell in to anarchy, the top twenty floors of Simpson Tower would just detach and propel itself into orbit.
Long ago previous Simpsons bought, borrowed and stole as much of the world’s historical items and documents as possible. Specialized vaults made of carbon steel would keep them safe from the harshness of space. Almost constant updates were being made to various areas of the twenty floors to keep up with new innovations thus making the structure lighter, faster, stealthier, and stronger than before.
The building below would actually stay intact, which amused Michael. The floor below the lifeboat contained a new roof and held all of the machinery for the building below. Thrusters would be maneuvered out from the sides of the top section of Tower and be far enough away from the exterior to not harm the building. Initially the angle of the thrusters would move the locking plate and disconnect the top from the bottom then be adjusted to provide lift.
Michael what only half listening to world news broadcast of the riots, robberies, mini and micro wars going on outside. World scholars had determined the course of events and thus far were spot on. Economic meltdown on a global scale, nation turning their backs on each other, food and fuel shortages leading directly to major wars and finally nuclear war on a global scale.
“Weaker countries are helpless Steve. The largest nations are individually invading weaker nations to consolidate resources. As of now the US has control of all of North America, Greenland and islands of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Hati, control of all of the African nations are falling to Iraq, Brazil seems to be in control of South America, Russia has taken all of its former republics back, China controls from Mongolia south to New Zealand and from India to the Marshall Islands and Europe is peaceably joining with Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, France and is looking at other surrounding countries. Sticking points are the countries between North and South America like Panama and Costa Rica and other outlying island nations.”
