Sara

“Sara? Where are you. You know I hate it when you hide.” Joanna McEllen searches for her daughter. She isn’t yet worried. Sarha has hidden before. Though she is getting better.

“OK.  I give up. You can come out now.”, Joanna sat on a footstool covered with a rough fabric that has a flower design. She didn’t like the footstool but her husband Dave did.

“Close your eyes, Mommy. I don’t want you to see my hiding place. OK?” whispered a soft, tiny voice belonging a six year old girl.

“OK. They’re closed.” Then from no ordinary hiding place Sara “popped” into view. Sara had not told her mother that she could “disappear”. She was still getting used to it.  Being six did not show in Sara, most of the time.  Sure she played with her friends. She got into trouble. She went to school. She did all of the normal stuff other six year olds did, but she also did this.

“Hi!” Sara had appeared right in front of her mother; so close, in fact, it startled her mother.

“OH!” Joanna gasped for air and pulled back. Sara was literally inches from her face. Joanna did not here her “sneak” up. She did not even hear her breathing. “How did you get so close without me hearing you?”

“You know Mommy I am getting better at hiding. Ya know cause I am six now.”

“Oh. I know. Isn’t it great being six? I remember being six, or so anyway. It was so much fun.  I was good at hiding too.”

“But not as good as me, right?”

“No. Not as good as you, baby.” Joanna was shaking her head and made a face that indicated the same.
